| India has a large but depleting tribal population. There are about 40 main tribes and hundreds of sub-tribes spread over the length and breadth of the country. These tribes though similar in many ways differ largely in their customs and their handicrafts. The age old rural and tribal crafts are part of India's rich heritage, preserved with loving care, uneroded by the machine era. Expressing itself through its handicrafts like panels of wood, looms of logs and bamboo, bell metal and brass utilitarian and decorative items of bell metals and dhokra are also popular among the tribals. These statues originated in the tribal area of the Central India which is presently Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. |
